Prevention
Just like we practice healthy habits for our total body health, it is important to practice preventive dental care. Professional dental cleanings and checkups are an investment in your future dental health.
You may need more frequent professional dental cleanings if you fall into any of these categories:
-
Have gums that bleed easily (gingivitis).
-
Have a history of periodontal disease (periodontitis).
-
Have a high rate of tooth decay.
-
Are pregnant.
-
Have diabetes.
-
Have heart disease.
-
Have diseases of chronic inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Periodontal disease, because it is caused by bacteria, worsens when plaque bacteria levels increase. Many patients have their teeth cleaned every 3 months. Why? Because extensive studies show bacteria levels can get to a toxic level every 90 days (3 months). By having a thorough dental cleaning every 3 months, you lower your chance of periodontal disease progressing and causing more harm.
Most patients have been advised by their physician to stay in good oral health, to minimize the effects of oral infection on their total body heath. When you are seen for your dental examination, we will perform a thorough medical history and keep you informed of the latest information regarding your specific health concerns and their relationship to your dental health.
